The project will raise the existing 67m high dam by 35.7m using roller compacted concrete (RCC). The resultant increase in storage of 187.5Mm3 addresses SDCWA's need for both emergency and carry-over water storage.
The San Vicente dam and reservoir - originally built in 1943 - is the final part of SDCWA's US$827M, 10 year emergency storage project which increases the amount of water available in San Diego County during emergencies, such as drought or earthquake.
When completed, the San Vicente dam project will be the largest raise of a concrete dam in the US and the first major raise of a concrete dam using RCC in the world.
