Nam Ngiep 1 starts commercial operation

Commercial operations have begun at the 290MW Nam Ngiep 1 hydropower project in Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Kansai Electric Power Co. Inc has announced.

Located on the Nam Ngiep River, a tributary of the Mekong River, the project is operated by Nam Ngiep 1 Power Company (NNP1). It features two hydropower stations, with the main power station equipped with power units with a total capacity of 270MW and a re-regulation power station with a 20MW capacity. The project also features a 167m high, 530m long dam.

NNP1 supplies electricity to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) from the main station, while the re-regulation station supplies power to Electricite Du Laos (EDL).

Construction of the project began back in October 2014, and NNP1 received the commercial operation date certificate from EGAT on 5 September 2019.

NNP1 is a joint venture between Kansai, EGAT International and Lao Holding State Enterprise.
