Nam Theun Hinboun Expansion project progressing

6 July 2007

Environmental impact assessment (EIA) activities are nearing their conclusion on the scheme – developed by the Government of Lao PDR, GMS Power of Thailand and Nordic Hydropower – while commercial agreements and financing for the IPP are also well advanced.

The main civil works will comprise a 70m high RCC dam with a 2x30MW power station, a new intake at the existing Theun Hinboun dam downstream, a 5300m long tunnel (about 7m diameter) parallel to the existing tunnel and a new 220MW power station. The new dam is about 20km upstream from the existing Theun Hinboun dam. The 220MW plant is an extension of the existing power station while the 60MW plant is at the new dam.

The Theun Hinboun project draws water from the Nam Theun river, downstream from the Nam Theun 2 project, which is currently under construction. The new dam will be on one of the major tributaries flowing into the Nam Theun downstream from the NT2 dam. The dam will include major spillway works, low level outlets, and the power station.
