New dams planned for Nigeria

At a meeting held recently in Abuja, Director of Dams, Irrigation and Drainage at the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources, Engr. Magnus Gundiri, said that 28 of the projects would receive funding from the mainline budget, with the remaining projects to be completed through the Agricultural Intervention Fund. These projects are: Ilesha Dam, the Kano River irrigation scheme, Chouchi irrigation scheme, Bagwai irrigation scheme, Galma Dam, Lower Ogun irrigation scheme, the Obafemi Owode scheme and Jare Dam.

According to local media reports, during the meeting Gundiri said new irrigation schemes were needed to combat water shortages and improve catchment managment.
