Non-Linear Seismic Evaluation of Concrete Dams Utilizing a Simplified Isotropic Damage Model

Reza Akbari, Seyed Alireza Hashempour & Vahid Lotfi

Abstract: In the present study, a non-linear model is presented to investigate the seismic cracking of concrete dams. This model is much more simplified and efficient in comparison with available damage models. It can represent softening, hardening and stiffness degradation of concrete due to load reversal. Additionally, it is able to predict the final and residual strength of the structure in softening with good accuracy. This model is utilized to analyze the non-linear behaviour of Koyna gravity dam and Morrow Point arch dam. In both cases, the dam-reservoir interaction is considered with modified Westergaard’s approach, and the foundation is assumed to be rigid. It is concluded that the employed model is capable of predicting realistic crack patterns through the dam body, and it can be a good replacement for other time consuming and complicated models.

Hydro Caverns Offer Vital Experience for Underground Oil and Gas Storage

Prof. Bjørn Nilsen

Norway’s experience with extensive hydropower development and surge chamber cavern technology offered lessons for its underground oil and gas storage projects.
