North Korea has constructed two power plants on the upper Imjin river near the demilitarised zone (DMZ).
The Central Broadcasting Station, North Korea's state-run radio, has said that construction has been completed on the third and fourth April 5 power plants by damming up a stream on the Imjin river, adding to two other plants constructed in March 2001.
The first and second April 5 power plants, located in a gorge of the Imjin river, 1km north of the DMZ's northern boundary, are small-sized power stations with a daily power generating capacity of 20-30kw and can store up to 35M tons of water.
