Nicaragua has a hydroelectric potential of 3280MW, of which only 98MW is currently being utilized. This represents a huge potential for companies interested in developing hydroelectric projects in the country, in addition to the opportunities in other types of renewable energy sources, said PRONicaragua, the Nicaraguan Investment Promotion Agency.
The Tumarin project on the Grande River in Matagalpa could be one of the most important projects in the last 50 years in Nicaragua, according to representatives of the National Assembly. It is estimated to produce 250MW, one third of the country's current demand, and will save up to US$100 million in fuel imports per year.
In addition, other large scale projects will also contribute to increase the country's capacity, such as the 100MW HIDROGESA project and the 250MW Brito scheme.
