No end to Baglihar clash

21 January 2005

EVEN AFTER extending talks by a day, India and Pakistan failed to find a resolution to their Baglihar dam dispute. The conflicting countries spent a total of four days in talks – 4th to 7th January – but could not agree on a solution to this long-running argument.

The tension comes from Pakistan’s belief that by building the Bagliahr, in Indian-administered Kashmir, India are violating the 1960 Indus Water Basins Treaty, which outlines the even distribution of waters from their shared rivers.

The World Bank, who brokered the original treaty, has confirmed that Pakistan have approached them for their represented a neutral third party arbitrator, but has yet to commit.
