Obayashi Corp wins order for Nam Ngiep 1 project, Laos

Obayashi Corporation has been contracted to carry out civil engineering works for Nam Ngiep 1 Hydropower Project in Laos.

The project includes construction of concrete gravity dams and two power stations on the Nam Ngiep River, a tributary of the Mekong on the border of Laos and Thailand. The main dam is 148m high, 530m long with a volume of approximately 2Mm3. The power stations will be equipped with outputs of approximately 270MW and 18MW respectively. Obayashi Corporation is responsible for construction of the main dam body, power station, road, and associated works.

Preparatory works for road, river diversion, excavation for the dam foundation, and temporary facilities for the dam will be executed from 2013 to 2015. Concrete placement of the main dam body will commence in 2016, with power generation scheduled to start in January 2019.

The project is being developed by Nam Ngiep 1 Power Co., Ltd, a joint venture of Kansai Electric Power Company Incorporated's wholly ownef subsidairy KPIC Netherlands (45% stake), EGAT International (30%) and Lao Holding State Enterprise (25%).
