The 12.5MW plant was developed with OPG as majority holder (75%) in the project with the balance held by Lac Seul First Nation. The partners share both profits and risks, OPG said.
Lac Seul is located downstream of Ear Falls plant and uses water previously spilled past the almost 80-year old facility.
At the official opening, the Minister of Energy and Infrastructure, George Smitherman, said the project was a 'trailblazer for a new co-operative model that we hope to build through the proposed Green Energy Act'.
The plant has also been given a name in the Ojibway language - Obishikokaang Waasiganikewigamig, or White Pine Narrows powerhouse.
