Pakistan, Japan in funding deal

Pakistan and Japan have signed a $24 million loan agreement for the second phase of the Islamabad-Burhan Transmission Line Reinforcement project, a scheme which will reinforce existing 220kV transmission lines between the Tarbela hydropower plant and a substation in Burhan.

The reinforcement will increase the lines existing capacity threefold.

The loan will be implemented by  the Japan International Cooperation Agenc. Funds will cover civil work and equipment.

So far, the Japanese government has agreed funding of $960m and a grant of $156m for the major project, which will help stabilise power supply in Islamabad.
