Plan for inflatable river dam delayed

4 July 2002

FPL ENERGY MAINE HYDRO wants to install two inflatable rubber dams separated by a small concrete pier on the Androscoggin River at its Gulf Island Dam between Auburn and Lewiston in the US.

The dams would replace four towers, two cables and 73 hinged panels that now stretch above a portion of the dam's concrete spillway. To install the new dams, FPL Energy would have to lower the water level in Gulf Island Pond from mid-August to the first week in November.

The project was scheduled to start in mid-July, but it has been postponed because the rubber dams won't be available until October.
