THE PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT of Newfoundland and Labrador in Canada has compiled an inventory of 189 rivers and their potential for generating a total of 1900MW of hydroelectricity.
The provincial inventory lists the Upper Humber, Exploits and Bay du Nord rivers as having the potential for multiple large developments. Seven small-scale hydro sites ranging from 2.6MW to 11.5MW have been identified for Portland Creek, just north of Gros Morne National Park. Three sites are listed on the River of Ponds, located about midway up the Northern Peninsula, with the largest rated at 35MW.
Four potential sites have also been indentified at Piper's Hole river, just west of Swift Current. They could house two large-scale projects generating 80MW and 126MW of electricity, respectively, and two small-scale projects under 10MW.
