The heavy parts for the project’s hydroelectric units were loaded onto a river-sea class vessel on Sverdlovskaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg in early September. Transportation of the first three sets of large-size equipment, each consisting of a hydroturbine runner (weight 145 tons, diameter 6.84m), generator bearing oil bath (weight 21 tons, diameter 6.1m), and 13-ton rotor frame of an auxiliary generator (frame diameter 6.09m) is being be carried out the only possible way - by sea and river. The second shipment is expected to take 35 to 40 days.
Power Machines has also manufactured and shipped to the project the hydro turbine and hydro generator equipment as well as the fourth hydro generator. At present, the shipment of the fifth hydro generator equipment is almost complete, and the finished parts of the fourth hydro turbine and the sixth hydro generator are being shipped.
The 11.7B Roubles contract to produce the main energy equipment for the Sayano-Shushenskaya overhaul was signed by Power Machines and RusHydro in November 2009. Under the terms of the contract, Power Machines are to manufacture 10 hydro turbines and nine hydro generators with a capacity of 640MW each as well as six excitation systems. Furthermore, Power Machines’ engineers will provide installation, supervision services and commissioning of the supplied equipment.
RusHydro began implementing the second stage of Sayano-Shushenskaya reconstruction earlier this year. The company will install ten new hydro-power units. The four units that returned to operation in 2010 following repair will also be replaced with new units. The first unit (under station number 1) is planned for commissioning in December 2011. From 2012 three units will be commissioned each year, meaning that by 2014 the Sayano-Shushenskaya project will have been completely re-equipped with new and modern equipment designed to meet all reliability and safety requirements.
The reconstruction work is needed following an incident on 17 August 2009, when water flooded the machinery hall; the project’s power and auxiliary equipment were damaged and the frameworks of the machinery hall building collapsed. Seventy-five people were killed in the accident.
