Quake warning system for Three Gorges

5 April 2005

The system combines a local earthquake monitoring station with the Chongqing’s GPS monitoring network to improve the existing geological disaster monitoring system, which was designed for detecting only medium and strong geological movement.

‘With the new network, even the slightest movement in the reservoir area can be detected, providing local government complete first-hand information,’ Xinhua news agency quoted Hu Xuqing, an official in charge of the geological calamities prevention office of the reservoir office, as saying.

China has invested more than US$482M in the prevention and control of geological disasters in the Three Gorges area. The Yangtze river based project is expected to come online in 2009.
