Reconstruction work is set to start on two large hydropower schemes with a total capacity of 1.3GW in Nigeria after Mainstream Energy Solutions Ltd approved a feasibility study of the work prepared by RusHydro subsidiary RusHydro International AG.
In 2013, the firms signed a five year cooperation agreement in regards to modernization of the Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants. The engineering services provided by RusHydro Internatrional AG include development of project documentation, organization of tenders for equipment supply as well as for installation and construction works, and also consulting on operation and maintenance of the plants. RusHydro International AG implements the project in partnership with Institute Hydroproject (RusHydro Group), Pöyry and Mott MacDonald.
Following approval of the study, RusHydro International AG said it will soon initiate tenders for the equipment supply and construction works.
The Kainji and Jebba hydropower plants are located on the Niger river, and have installed capacities of 750MW and 578MW respectively. The current available capacity of the plants is however substantially below these figures
