Replacement Kaplan units for Sweden's Lernbo

3 October 2007

The turbines and generators are being replaced as part of a refurbishment project budgeted at US$13M.

Two 1.7m diameter Kaplan turbines of 3.5MW capacity will be installed at Lernbo, plus direct-coupled synchronous generators (428rpm, 10.5kV) with provisions for islanding operation.

The client, Vasterbergslagens Kraft, plans to have work at the plant commence in March 2009 and be completed by October that year.

Vasterbergslagens Kraft said the refurbished plant would have its annual electricity production increase by 22% to 28GWh annually. It will also receive carbon certificates for production for 15 years, which would help to pay for the investment.
