Major rock-blasting work began in August last year to obtain 16Mt of rock to build the concrete faced rockfill dam. The blasting works will continue over the next four years while the dam is being built. It is estimated that to obtain the required amount of rock, 20Mt need to be blasted. When completed, the dam will be 205m high and about 700m long, making it the second highest rock-fill dam in the world next to China's Shibuya dam.
According to Malaysia's Minister of Finance, Electricity from Sarawak, mostly from the Bakun project, will be ‘exported’ to Sabah, Brunei and Indonesia when the Trans-Borneo Power Grid (TBPG) Interconnection is realised by 2008.
