Salini Impregilo to design and build Georgian hydro plant

Salini Impregilo has won a $575 million contract for the design and construction of the 280MW Nenskra hydroelectric project in the mountainous region of Svaneti, Georgia.

The contract was awarded by JSC Nenskra Hydro, a consortium of Korea Water Resources Corporation (K-water) and the Georgian Government.

The project will include a 135m high, 820m long asphalt face rockfill dam, a 9m high, 50m long weir on the Nakra river, 14.4km long transfer tunnel, and a 15.6km long headrace tunnel. The project will also feature an open-air powerhouse with four vertical-axis Pelton turbines.

Work is due to be completed in 62 months.
