Serbia cuts power to industry as drought continues

12 January 2001

In an attempt to protect the public from longer blackouts which are affecting 75% of the country, Serbia cut power to industry on 27 December 2000.

The current power crisis is due to a persistent drought which has caused river and reservoir levels to drop and has reduced the country’s daily output of hydroelectricity by up to 40M kWh. Serbia’s run-down thermal plants are also working at reduced capacity.
