SMEC, EGC to assess hydro potential in the Indus Basin, Pakistan

SMEC, in association with its subsidiary EGC, has won a contract to assess potential hydropower development options in the Indus Basin in Pakistan.

The World Bank funded consultancy services contract for Strategic and Sectoral Environmental and Social Assessments (SSESA) was awarded by the Ministry of Water and Power, Government of Pakistan.

The objectives of the project are to review existing water sector polices and institutional frameworks, and enhance sustainable hydropower development through improvements in power strategy. The contract will also see the firms identify potential environmental impacts, and define the best storage and hydropower options to meet the expected energy demand, while taking into account technical, financial, environmental and social considerations.
