SMEC to study feasibility of Malaysian project

SMEC has been awarded the feasibility study contract for the Telom Hydroelectric Project in Malaysia by the country's electricity utility company, Tenaga Nasional Berhad.

The main features of the project include a 105m high dam, a 132MW surface power station and a 10km long tunnel which will transfer water from an adjacent catchment to the Telom Dam reservoir.

SMEC has extensive experience in Malaysia's hydropower sector, with projects dating back to the 1970s. Currently, SMEC is providing design and construction supervision services for the 372MW Ulu Jelai Hydroelectric Project. Scheduled for completion in 2016, Ulu Jelai will provide valuable power to Malaysia's national power grid.
