Study on contraction joints for the Longtan RCC gravity dam

12 February 2004

Based on the physical properties of the rolled compacted concrete of the Longtan project, the temperature and the thermal stress fields developed in the dam with or without a longitudinal joint at construction, as well as the maximal temperature drop, are calculated by means of a relocating mesh finite elements method so as to simulate the construction process. The computation results show that the value of the thermal stresses developed in the dam even, without any longitudinal joint, could meet the design criteria provided the placement temperature is adequately controlled.
