Thai small hydro push with package of six schemes

30 May 2007

The six small hydro plants will have a total capacity of almost 79MW and are to be completed by 2009-10. They are to be built by the Hydro Power Construction Division of the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT).

EGAT said the contract will consist of hydro plants built at six dams: Pasak Jolasid, Khun Dan Prakarnchon, Chao Phraya, Mae Klong, Naresuan, and Quae Noi.

The initiative to push the package of small hydro projects was launched three and a half years ago and was approved by the government in December 2006. EGAT said the venture aims to promote hydro exploitation in conjunction with water resource management for irrigation. The recent signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) saw EGAT agree to a venture with the Royal Irrigation Department.
