THDC seals agreement for 1200MW Kalai-II project, India

THDC India Limited has finalized a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) for the implementation of the 1200MW Kalai-II hydroelectric project in the Anjaw District of Arunachal Pradesh, India. 

Sh. R. K. Vishnoi, Chairman and Managing Director of THDC India Limited, revealed that the project comprises seven generating units, including six 190MW units and one 60MW unit, with an estimated project cost of Rs. 13,000 Crore.

The MoA signing ceremony took place in New Delhi on 30 December, with Shri Bhupender Gupta, Director (Technical) representing THDC India Limited, and Shri Ankur Garg (IAS), Commissioner (Hydro) representing the Government of Arunachal Pradesh. The ceremony was attended by notable figures, including Dr. H. K Paliwal, Advisor to the Government of Arunachal, Sh. Dharmendra (IAS), Chief Secretary, Govt. of Arunachal, and officials from THDC India Limited and the Government of Arunachal Pradesh.

The Chief Secretary of the Government of Arunachal Pradesh highlighted the transformative impact the Kalai-II project (HEP) is expected to have on the holistic development of the Lohit basin region. Emphasizing the project's role beyond energy security, the Chief Secretary expressed optimism about its contribution to the comprehensive advancement of the region.

Sh. Vishnoi underscored the historic nature of the venture, being the first project in the Lohit basin to be implemented by Central Public Sector Undertakings (CPSUs), signalling a move towards sustainable and inclusive development. 

Highlighting the project's contribution to the nation's green energy goals, Sh. Vishnoi informed that the Kalai-II project is expected to generate 4852.95 million units (MU) annually, aligning with the national target of increasing the share of green energy in the overall energy mix.

Beyond power generation, the project is poised to catalyze socio-economic development in Arunachal Pradesh. Sh. Vishnoi emphasized the initiative's goal to positively impact local communities by fostering economic growth, enhancing infrastructure, and improving living standards.
