Third unit commissioned at Sangtuda-1

5 November 2008

The fourth, and last, of the 167.5MW main generating units is to be at the beginning of next year. The turbines, which have 6.36m diameter runners, are supplied by Power Machines. The entire project is to be completed by April 2009.

There is an extra unit planned for use at the 670MW plant for generating additional output during high water levels.

The first two units were commissioned in January and mid-year, respectively. Sangtuda-1 is one of the plants of the hydro power cascade on the river Vakhsh.

Power shortages have led to the accelerated commissioning of the plant, which is designed to produce 2700GWh annually. Russia has been helping the Government of Tajikistan to complete the scheme, delayed since the fall of the Soviet Union, and work only resumed seriously in 2004.

The budget for the project is approximately R17.2B (US$640M), said Inter Rao UES, which is leading Russia's participation in the joint company developing the project.

Also being developed on the Vakhsh cascade is a sister project, Sangtuda-2 (220MW) and Rogun (3600MW).
