Three new hydro plants planned for Ghana

4 June 2015

Three new hydropower plants with a combined capacity of 42MW could be built on the Ankobra River in Ghana following the signing of a US$164 million deal between Small Hydro Development Company Limited (SHDCL) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

Local media has reported that SHDCL has completed pre-feasibility studies and acquired provisional IPP licences for the Maham, Tarkwa-Breman and Nsuaem projects, and has also initiated the necessary approval processes with the Water Resource Commission.

If full approval is given, construction is expected to start in 2017.
