Tibet starts its biggest hydro project

The Zhigung hydroelectric plant, on the Lhasa river in Maizhokunggar county, will provide power totalling over 400M kWh annually for Lhasa and other cities in central Tibet. Its power station, rated at 100MW, will be fed from a reservoir holding 225M m3 of water.

Construction is expected to take five years, at a cost of US$162M.
