Tâmega complex inaugurated in Portugal

18 July 2022

The Tâmega hydroelectric complex in Portugal - one of the largest energy storage facilities in Europe – has been officially inaugurated, the Corner has reported.

The project was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister of Portugal, António Costa, and Chairman of Iberdrola, Ignacio Sánchez Galán,

The Tâmega complex is one of Europe’s largest energy storage facilities with an investment of more than €1.5 billion. It comprises three reservoirs (Gouvães, Daivões and Alto Tâmega) and three hydroelectric power plants with 1158MW capacity on the Tâmega river, a tributary of the Douro.

In addition, two wind farms will be built and linked to the giga-battery, converting the complex into a hybrid power plant, whose eventual power is expected to reach 300MW, making this one of Portugal's biggest wind projects.

In January this year, Iberdrola synchronised the first 220MW turbine at the Gouvães hydroelectric power plant, delivering clean power to the grid for the first time.

The Tâmega giga battery will add 880 MW of pumped storage capacity to the Portuguese electricity system, a 30% increase in the storage capacity available in the country today.
