UK ENERGY MINISTER BRIAN Wilson last month announced a comprehensive study on options for strengthening the transmission system between Scotland and the rest of the UK.
Wilson said that without the enhancement of transmission capacity, there was no chance of Scotland realising its potential in renewable energy.
The news follows an earlier announcement by Wilson that another study has been commissioned to investigate the electricity transmission and distribution system's resilience and its ability to cope with extreme condition or an emergency.
The study, to begin in March 2002, will ask electricity companies how their plans have developed in response to changes such as reorganisations and mergers in the industry, and recently observed erratic weather patterns.
