TVA seeks hydro, renewables in 2GW clean energy call

5 December 2008

The utility wants proposals and offers from companies capable of delivering at least 1MW. TVA added that it is looking for proposals to provide supplies from 1-20 years.

While TVA's hydro power output is down by half due to drought, the resource is wanted among the proposals that will come from renewables, such as solar, wind, geothermal and biofuels. The range of potential hydro resources include ocean, tidal and current.

The clean energies that TVA will consider include combind heat and power, waste heat recovery and other low-carbon emitting resources.

TVA said it would place its supply contracts with providers under power purchase agreements (PPAs).

Beyond the power call, the Environment Policy approved by the TVA Board forecasts that more than half of the utility's total power generation will come from zero or low-carbon sources, such as nuclear and renewables by 2020. TVA added that this power call was an important step towards the fulfilment of that goal.
