UK Environment Agency to use 3D mapping technology

16 October 2002

The EA will use a 3D digital terrain map derived from Intermap Technology's NEXTMap Britain project, which will be sold through Gettmapping, Intermap's Master Distributor in the UK.

NEXTMap Britain has been designed to provide highly accurate terrain mapping with elevation points taken every 5m, the ground surface being modelled in detail up to an accuracy of 1m across the whole country. In selected areas, a second set of mapping data will be provided to a vertical accuracy of 50cm. In addition, a digital orthorectified radar image data will also be delivered to the EA.

The EA flood mapping programme is a key component of recently announced advances on flood defence.
