Ukraine’s energy minister, Herman Halushchenko, has said that hydropower facilities were among critical infrastructure hit in targeted attacks by Russia on Monday, news wires have reported.
Rockets reportedly hit hydropower plants, electric substations and heat generation plants, with the Ministry of Defence in Russia confirming that it had targeted energy systems.
Power and water supplies in Ukraine were affected following the attacks, the energy minister said, while urging residents of unaffected areas to reduce electricity use where possible to help restore power to blacked out areas.
According to elektrovesti.net, the hydro plants hit during the attacks include the Dnprovskyi facility and the Dniester dam and hydro plant.
Eddie Rich, CEO of the International Hydropower Association, issued the following statement after reports of attacks on hydroelectric facilities: “We are deeply concerned to learn of the recent missile attacks on energy and water infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, including hydropower plants. Our thoughts and prayers for safety and peace go out to everyone affected.
“The International Hydropower Association condemns in the strongest possible terms any action that seeks to weaponise hydroelectric assets that are designed to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy and water supply for all.
“We call for infrastructure workers in Ukraine to be allowed to fulfil their duties. We continue to monitor the situation through our international network.”
