Ukrhydroenergo spearheads green hydrogen market development in Ukraine leveraging hydropower

25 January 2024

Ukrhydroenergo has unveiled a pilot green hydrogen project that promises to propel the formation and expansion of the hydrogen market in Ukraine. The announcement was made by Valentyn Gvozdiy, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Ukrhydroenergo, during a meeting with Jonas Moberg, CEO of the Green Hydrogen Organization, on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The ambitious project is set to leverage the renewable potential of Ukrainian hydroelectric power plants to produce green hydrogen. Positioned as a testing ground for cutting-edge technologies in the hydrogen sector, the initiative is poised to play a pivotal role in advancing the green energy market within Ukraine.

The green hydrogen venture forms a key component of Ukrhydroenergo's broader strategy to revitalize and modernize the nation's energy infrastructure. The overarching goal is to bolster the resilience and autonomy of Ukraine's energy system by focusing on import substitution and meeting the country's commitments under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Jonas Moberg lauded Ukrhydroenergo's forward-thinking initiative, acknowledging its vital role, particularly in the face of damage to the company's hydro facilities caused by external threats.
