Hydro power contributes approximately 50% to total renewable generation capacity in the UK. Under appropriate conditions the British Hydropower Association says there is the potential to develop millions of dollars worth of new hydroelectric potential over the next five to six years.

Existing hydro generation:

• Conventional hydro power = 1349MW

• Pumped storage = 2488MW

Of this potential generation:

• Large hydro power = 750MW (mainly in Scotland)

• Small hydro power = 100MW
