US conservationists serve notice to SCE&G

1 October 2003

American Rivers AND THE Coastal Conservation League have served notice that they are filing action against South Carolina Electric and Gas (SCE&G) and federal energy regulators under the Clean Water Act. A 60 day notice of a pending citizen's suit is required by federal law.

According to the Conservationists, SCE&G has caused water quality violations by running Saluda dam to generate maximum profit. At issue are peaking operations the Conservationist groups say that these operations deplete water in the Saluda river of oxygen to the detriment of its ecological health and recreational value.
