US utility eyes further hydro development

Utility Spartanburg Water has announced it is exploring the benefits of adding small-scale hydroelectric power on Lake Blalock in South Carolina, US.

The Commission of Public Works for the City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg Water's executive leadership said that additional investment has been approved to conduct a series of studies to support the advancement of hydroelectric generation on the lake.

The utility, in partnership with environmental stakeholders, has initiated a number of important studies and inventories of Lake Blalock and its ecosystem. This will include a review of water quality, shoreline habitat and recreation, while considering rare, threatened and endangered species and cultural and historic resources.
