Waneta Expansion online ahead of schedule

8 April 2015

The $900 million, 335MW Waneta Expansion hydroelectric facility near Trail, British Columbia, is now online and generating power, six weeks ahead of schedule.

The Waneta Expansion, which was completed on budget, adds a second powerhouse, immediately downstream of the Waneta Dam on the Pend d'Oreille River. The project included construction of a 10km, 230kV transmission line and provides enough energy to power about 60,000 homes per year.

The project was developed by the Waneta Expansion Limited Partnership, which consists of majority owner Fortis (51%) together with Columbia Power Corporation and Columbia Basin Trust.

All of the output of the Waneta Expansion will be sold to BC Hydro and FortisBC Inc. under 40-year contracts
