Wave energy converter construction underway announces MPS

13 December 2016

A milestone has been reached for Marine Power Systems (MPS) WaveSub project with the news that construction work is underway on the wave energy converter.

An event was held last week in Pembroke Dock to mark the construction of the converter,  which is due to be deployed next year. MPS awarded the tender for the manufacture of its WaveSub device to South Wales based Ledwood Mechanical Engineering, after a rigorous tendering process, assessing the company’s expertise in fabrication services, which has been crucial to the assembly of the main structure of the WaveSub.

The fabrication of the 1:4 scale WaveSub is an important step in the journey towards commercialisation of the project. The device is 15m long, 10m wide and 2.5m tall. A full scale, single device will be 40m long.

The WaveSub project has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, with MPS receiving a £2 million grant in October 2015.
