Wave Hub equipment order for Powermann

7 August 2009

The Poole, Dorset-based company received a £1M (US$1.7M) order to supply transformer, electrical switchgear and other high-voltage equipment for the project.

A contract for £7.6M (US$12.7M) was previously placed with JDR Cable Systems to make 26.5km of cable and the hub assembly.

The first wave energy device that is to be linked to the 20MW hub system is to be supplied by Ocean Power Technologies (OPT). It will hook-up a PowerBuoy wave energy converter.

Development of the scheme – which will be scalable to 50MW – is being led by South West Regional Development Agency (South West RDA). It is contributing funds to the scheme along with the UK Government and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The marine energy potential of the area, and the lead shown by Wave Hub, has led the regional to be named as the UK’s first Low Carbon Economic Area.
