The £900,000 (US$1.6M) dam was needed after the events of autumn 2000, when several parts of Kent flooded. The village of East Peckham was one such area that had to be evacuated after the Leigh flood barrier reached its maximum capacity. Other badly hit villages included Collier Street, Laddingford, Stile Bridge and Yalding.
Further flooding in 2002 saw East Peckham residents form the East Peckham Flood Relief Partnership (EPFRP) in order to dispense advice, organise sandbag supplies and help authorities in the event of another deluge. EPFRP is working together with the UK Environment Agency on the project.
The contruction of the dam will be studied by school children as a project, says Tonbridge and Malling council.
