The government has also allowed two private companies to explore hydro power potential in a bid to carry out an expression of interest in the development of the Kalungwishi river in Northern Province. The two firms would focus on the development of the hydro potential on Chimpempe Lumangwe, Kambwelume and the Kundabwika waterfalls sites in Northern Province. Zambia has an installed electricity generation capacity of 1786MW out of which 1676MW is hydro power.

The country has an undeveloped hydro power generation potential of over 6000MW and plans are underway to develop a number of both large and small hydro power stations.
