Koyna dam survives quake

17 March 2005

The tremor on Monday was just one of over 100,000 that the dam has survived during its 42-year existence. According to an engineer, the state government has already undertaken renovation work since October to strengthen the dam against the heavy flow of water during monsoons.

Parts of the Koyna were damaged in December 1967 when the dam was hit by an earthquake measuring approximately 7.0 on the Richter scale.
