Fortis unit cleared by Belize to build 18MW Vaca

31 May 2007

The US$52.5M Vaca project is the last phase of a three stage hydro development on the Macal river. The first two plants supplying Belize Electricity Ltd are 7MW Chalillo, which has a reservoir, and the 25MW run-of-river Mollejon.

Becol has signed a 50-year supply contract with Belize Electricity Ltd to supply power from the Vaca run-of-river scheme starting in 2009. The company expects to generate a further 80GWh from the river after the plant is operational, taking the total electricity generated annually from the three plants to an average of 240GWh.

Becol is indirectly wholly-owned by Fortis, which is a Canada-based energy distribution utility.
