Mavel nearing completion on five South Korean projects

21 February 2012

The company had signed a contract in April 2010 to provide hydraulic design and turbines and related equipment for the Yipo, Gangjeong, Hapcheon, Nakdan and Seungcheon hydroelectric power plants. The contracts call for the provision of 11 turbines that will have installed power totaling about 16.2MW. The projects – which utilize mavel’s low head Pit or Bulb Kaplan turbine technology – are part of South Korea’s ‘Four Rivers Project’ which will provide for the regulation of four major rivers and provide the region with a clean energy resource. The projects are owned by Korea Water Resources Corporation.

Mavel commissioned both the Yipo and Seungcheon projects in late 2011. The Yipo project was developed under contract to Daelim Industrial Co, Ltd as the general contractor in cooperation with APEC Asian Power & Energy Corp. The power plant, which is on the Han River, has nominal net head of 2.3m and total flow of 168m3/sec. Mavel’s scope of supply included hydraulic design, turbines, gearboxes, hydraulic power units, cooling system and installation supervision. The Yipo utilizes three double regulated Pit turbines type MAVEL KP3400K3 with runner diameter of 3400mm and three runner blades. Each turbine has installed power of 1.1MW for total installed power of about 3.3MW.

The Seungcheon project was developed under contract to Daeyang Electric Machinery Co. as EPC contractor. This site, situated on the Yeongsang River, has nominal net head of 3.5m and total nominal flow of 28m3/sec. Mavel provided hydraulic design, turbines, gearboxes, hydraulic power units, cooling system and installation supervision. The commissioned turbines are two double regulated Kaplan bulb turbines type MAVEL KA1580K3 with runner diameters of 1580 mm and three runner blades. Total combined installed power of the two turbines is 860kW.

The remaining three projects Gangjeong, Nakdan and Hapcheon are all on the Nakdong River.

Gangjeong has nominal head of 5m and total nominal flow of 73m3/sec. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan Pit turbines type MAVEL KP2500K4 with runner diameter of 2500mm and four runner blades. The total installed power will be approximately 3.3MW.

Nakdan has nominal net head of 7m and flow of 52m3/sec. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan PIT turbines type MAVEL KP2240K4 with 2240mm runner diameters and four runner blades. The total installed power of the two turbines will be just over 3.25MW.

The last site, Hapcheon, has nominal head of 5m and nominal flow is 123m3/sec. Mavel will provide two double regulated Kaplan Pit turbines type MAVEL KP3400K4 with runner diameter of 3400mm and four runner blades. Total installed power will be 5.5MW.
