Druk Green Power Corporation Limited has announced a major step forward in the development of the Dorjilung hydropower project, with its subsidiary Dorjilung Hydro Power Limited signing two significant pre-construction contracts.
The agreements, confirmed on April 6, 2026, mark a key milestone in the early-stage development of the project and are expected to accelerate progress on essential infrastructure ahead of full construction.
Under Package I, Patel Engineering Limited has been appointed to deliver critical civil and tunnelling works. The Indian firm will construct two diversion tunnels, install hydromechanical gates, and build a highway road tunnel – core components needed to prepare the site for the main works.
Package II has been awarded to Rigsar Construction Private Limited, one of Bhutan’s leading contractors. Its scope includes construction of Adit-4 of the headrace tunnel, as well as a cable access tunnel and associated pre-support access routes to the powerhouse.
Letters of Award for both contracts were issued on March 20, underlining the project’s steady transition from planning to execution.
DHPL said the selection of experienced contractors reflects a strategic focus on managing technical complexity while maintaining high standards of safety and quality. The early works, particularly tunnelling and access infrastructure, are considered crucial to ensuring efficient delivery of the overall hydropower scheme.
The Dorjilung hydropower project is a key component of Bhutan’s hydropower expansion strategy, aimed at strengthening generation capacity and supporting long-term energy security. By advancing pre-construction activities, DHPL is laying the groundwork for the next phase of development while reinforcing its commitment to sustainable infrastructure delivery.
