Koehler Renewable Energy has expanded its hydropower portfolio in Scotland with the acquisition of the Allt Mor hydroelectric plant in Kinloch Rannoch, Perthshire.

The deal was completed through the company’s UK subsidiary and marks the eighth run-of-river hydropower project in Koehler Renewable Energy’s UK portfolio.

Allt Mor has been operating since 2015, when it was developed as a joint venture between the Dunalastair Estate and Allt Mor Hydro Ltd. The plant was originally commissioned at 330kW before being upgraded to a feed-in capacity of 350kW. It now generates around 1.1GWh of electricity annually.

The site is known locally for its glass-fronted powerhouse, visible turbines and information screen showing real-time generation data, lifetime output, CO₂ savings and electric vehicle charging station usage.

Nicolas Christoph, Head of Wind, Solar, Hydro and Business Development at Koehler Renewable Energy, said: “With the acquisition of Allt Mor, we are further expanding our hydropower activities in Scotland. Projects like this demonstrate how reliable renewable generation can be successfully paired with strong local engagement. The plant fits very well with our long-term strategy to invest selectively in well-established and future-oriented renewable energy solutions.”

Following the acquisition, Koehler Renewable Energy’s UK hydropower portfolio now consists of eight run-of-river plants across Scotland with a combined maximum feed-in capacity of 4.12MW.

The company said the acquisition supports its broader renewable energy strategy and contributes to the “Koehler Promise 2030”, under which it aims to generate more renewable energy from its own plants than it consumes in paper production by 2030.

Alan Mathewson, Director Koehler Renewable Energy in the UK, said: “The Allt Mor plant is a well-established regional project, and very important within the local community. Our team looks forward to meeting and speaking with residents, learning about their views and ensuring a smooth transition in ownership. Small-scale hydropower continues to be a core part of our work in Scotland, and Allt Mor is a strong addition to our long-term investment in this sector.”
