ENGIE Hidroelétricas do Douro has awarded an ANDRITZ-led consortium a contract to rehabilitate and modernise three generating units at the Picote I hydropower plant in Portugal on behalf of Movhera Hidroelétricas do Norte S.A.
The contract, valued in the mid double-digit million-euro range, was included in ANDRITZ’s order intake for the second quarter of 2026.
The Picote I plant, located on the Douro River and operated by Movhera, forms part of Portugal’s Douro hydropower cascade. According to ANDRITZ, the refurbishment is intended to improve the plant’s efficiency, reliability and environmental performance.
Under the contract, ANDRITZ will supply three new 72MW Francis runners with new wicket gates, undertake the mechanical rehabilitation of the three generator rotors, modernise the mechanical power system, and carry out the dismantling and installation works.
The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2030. The first modernised unit is expected to be commissioned by the end of 2028, followed by the second unit at the end of 2029.
