CorPower Ocean has outlined plans to scale up wave energy development in Portugal during a visit by Swedish and Portuguese industry representatives to its manufacturing and operations facilities in Viana do Castelo.
The company’s planned 15MW VianaWave project will incorporate 45 commercial-scale wave energy converters, with construction expected to begin in 2028. The development represents its next step towards utility-scale deployment following the demonstration of its first commercial-scale machine in Portuguese waters.
The delegation, organised by the Swedish-Portuguese Chamber of Commerce and led by Sweden’s ambassador to Portugal, Johan Pehrson, discussed the potential contribution of wave energy to electricity supply and industrial development.
Discussions covered growing electricity demand from industry and data centres, and the role wave generation could play alongside wind and solar in Iberia. CorPower Ocean said combining these resources could help provide a more consistent renewable electricity supply.
Portugal has hosted both the company’s offshore demonstration activities and the development of manufacturing and testing facilities in Viana do Castelo. CorPower Ocean said its next phase would involve further investment in manufacturing capacity, supply chains, project deployment and local partnerships.
“Portugal has all the ingredients required to become a global leader in wave energy. The country combines an exceptional wave resource with world-class maritime expertise, industrial capabilities and political ambition,” said Patrik Möller, co-founder and CEO of CorPower Ocean.
“We believe wave energy can become a new export industry for Portugal while helping deliver affordable, reliable and home-grown clean electricity to support economic growth, industrial competitiveness and energy security.”
The company identified potential opportunities for Portuguese businesses across engineering, manufacturing, ports, offshore operations, logistics, vessel services and energy infrastructure.
Pehrson said: “Portugal and Sweden share a strong commitment to innovation, sustainability and industrial development. CorPower Ocean is an excellent example of how Swedish technology and Portuguese capabilities can work together to create new industries, strengthen Europe’s energy resilience and generate long-term economic value.”
Local government representatives also attended, including Viana do Castelo mayor Luís Nobre and Póvoa de Varzim mayor Andrea Silva. Nobre highlighted CorPower Ocean’s activities alongside the WindFloat Atlantic floating offshore wind project as part of Viana do Castelo’s investment in the energy transition.
