Prince Charles speaks out about the need for global action ahead of COP21

Prince Charles has spoken exclusively to Sky News TV station in the UK about climate change, ahead of the global climate summit COP21 to be held in Paris next week. He expresses concerns that we are heading towards “catastrophes and chaos” if we don’t address environmental issues, such as a rise in global temperatures, with more urgency.

Worker killed at Innergex hydro plant

Innergex Renewable Energy has reported that an explosion at the Upper Lillooet Hydro Project (ULHP) construction site in British Columbia, Canada on 18 November, resulted in the death of an employee of Prime Contractor CRT-EBC SENC. Another worker has received medical care and is currently considered out of danger.

Aquamarine Power ceases trading

Despite a comprehensive marketing process, and after speaking to a number of interested parties, Aquamarine Power announced on 23 November that it is to cease to trade the business. No offers were made for the company as a going concern, leaving no option but for the company to cease operations on 20 November. Thirteen jobs have been lost in Edinburgh and one in Belfast.

Dambuster medal auction will help build lifesaving sand dam

The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) and Bar awarded to Flight Lieutenant John Vere, who subsequently became one of the central figures of the legendary Dambusters raid in 1943, is to be sold by specialist auctioneers Morton & Eden in London on 15 December 2015 (Lot 945).

GE Renewable Energy to equip Mexican plant

GE Renewable Energy has been chosen to supply three bulb turbine-generators for the Chicoasén II project in Mexico. The Latin American consortium comprising Omega Construcciones Industriales, Sinohydro Costa Rica, Caabsa Infraestructura, and Desarrollo y Construcciones Urbanas made the decision about the hydro plant which belongs to the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE). The consortium will be led by the Sinohydro group and the CFE (who will also operate the power plant).

Hydropower is the only approach to meet GHG goals in New England

The US state of New England’s current electricity market structure is well suited to maintain power system reliability in winter months until at least 2030, according to a report conducted by Analysis Group Vice President Paul Hibbard and Manager Craig Aubuchon. The report, “Power System Reliability in New England: Meeting Electric Resource Needs in an Era of Growing Dependence on Natural Gas”, was conducted to provide an independent assessment of the region’s power system.

New hydropower training centre in Tanzania

Arusha Technical College (ATC) in Tanzania is reported to be setting up a hydropower training centre at Kikuletwa power station, which had previously been owned by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO).

Somali to consider rehabilitating Fanoole hydro dam

The Somali Government has submitted its Intended National Determined Contributions (INDC) to the UN this week. INDCs outline climate actions that individual countries intend to undertake under the new climate agreement to be decided at the COP21 conference in Paris, starting on 30 November. A US$28M project to rehabilitate the Fanoole hydropower dam has been suggested in the country’s plans.

Alberta releases tailings dam safety report

Canada’s Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has released the results of its dam safety inspections held earlier this year for containment structures used for the development of its energy resources. These include dams and liquid impoundments for oil sands tailing ponds, coal tailings ponds, and oil and gas fluid storage ponds.

US hydro industry leaders dispel false claims about licensing

Leaders of the hydropower industry have sent a letter to US House leadership calling for provisions to the recently approved energy bill that would bring hydropower licensing into the 21st century.
